Retül Frequently asked Questions

For the Rider

Why should I get a Dynamic 3D Retül fit?
Primarily, because the fit is dynamic, not static. The data sample is taken during an active pedaling cycle and gives you the most information about just what is happening while you are in motion, and in 3D, so we get both vertical and lateral movement at the same time.

How long does a Retül fit take?
Depending upon the process the fitter is using, an average fit with Retül runs 90-120 minutes, but if you have major adjustments or component changes, it can stretch longer than this.

How can a Retül fit help overcome and/or prevent injuries?
The key to applying knowledge about injury prevention is having the best data available. With the system's capability to track and monitor all 8 LED locations simultaneously, the movement of the body is tracked very specifically and with applied knowledge of kinesiology and bio-mechanics, in addition to rider provided information and feedback, a Retül fit can establish a final bike set-up that reduces injury opportunity and corrects injury-causing positions.

What if I want to transfer my fit to another bike/ bikes?
The software establishes a file for each rider, and within that file, the bike and final fit data is stored by each bike the rider would like to be fit to. The client receives a printed report of the final fit, so with an understanding of frame geometry differences and proper measuring tools, the cyclist can duplicate the numbers themselves on a new bike, keeping in mind that different types of riding may require different rider positions.

Where can I get a Retül fit?
Retül is available at a number of established bicycle businesses and through coaching and PT practices. See the "Find a Fitter" tool on our website. Retül also maintains a studio in Denver, CO, where Todd Carver (one of the three Retül principals) conducts fits.

For the Fitter

How does Retül improve or supplement our current fitting system?
Retül can be used alongside any sizing/measuring system used before a bicycle is selected. Using the system in conjunction with a fitting bike will truly allow you to develop a custom build and fit that is accurate to less than a millimeter. With the portable nature of the receiver and sensors, Retül doesn't have to take up a fixed footprint in your facility and is easy to breakdown and store when not in use.

What training do I need to start using Retül?
Once you decide to purchase a system, we will discuss the training process. Most retailers come out to our Denver studio to receive hands-on training with the Retül staff. Our goal is to get you intimately comfortable with the system and process in a minimal amount of time so that you get started using the system right away.

Isn't the placement of the LED harness somewhat subjective?
Yes, to a certain extent it is. The 8 physiological markers used to place the LED transmitters must be identified properly as you apply the harness. Locating and utilizing these markers is critical aspect of the Retül training process. Experienced fitters will likely have prior knowledge and comfort level locating these placements, and less practiced fitters must take on the responsibility of developing the basics of skeletal anatomy as part of the fitting craft. Retül staff provides in-house training to ensure fitters are correctly using the recommended data points.

Does the system provide client record keeping and fit history?
Absolutely. The system establishes data records to be stored on your PC with the rider profile, specific data from the fit,, the bike, and the final fit position. You will be able to access and print these records for comparison/distribution.

How does the fitter determine the sample size (time frame)?
This is a variable which you can determine. Generally the sample size should be at least 15 seconds at the desired rider power output, but samples over longer periods of time, perhaps with varying efforts, are at your discretion. We have used samples from 5 seconds to five minutes in the development of the system.

What professional development will Retül provide?
The fitting process is dynamic and evolving. Continuing education will be offered through the Retül University segment of our website and all resources available to us, i.e. web seminars, fitter's forums, conferences such as the Serotta International Cycling Institute, and others. We are committed to the sharing of information and allowing that fitters have widely varied backgrounds, experience, and expertise. The sharing of such knowledge only serves to strengthen the individual fitter and create the best possible bicycle fit for our clients.
